Prof. James Butler

NEW ZEALAND (NZ)
I am a Lecturer in Medical Sciences in the Department of Clinical and Biomedical Sciences within the University of Exeter Medical School. I mainly have teaching responsibilities on the BSc Medical Sciences, BSc Neuroscience, BSc Sport and Exercise Medical Sciences, and BMBS Medicine programmes. My area of expertise is infection and immunity, with my first degree being in the wider biomedical sciences. I joined the University of Exeter as an Associate Lecturer in October 2022 and was promoted to Lecturer in November 2023. In addition to teaching, I am Chair of a BMBS Medicine committee ensuring the provision of Medical Sciences teaching through the 5-year medical programme, and I am Deputy Module Lead and Lead for Scientific Communication for a core year 1 BSc Medical Sciences module. Prior to my current academic post, I was a Research Associate in Microbiology working with Prof Mat Upton at University of Plymouth on development of attenuated bovine herpesvirus-4 as a safe, inexpensive, single dose vaccine to control Streptococcus suis infection in domestic pigs. This project was funded by Innovate UK in collaboration with The Vaccine Group Ltd, Shanghai Veterinary Research Institute, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Previously, I was a PhD student in Microbiology and Nanomaterials, developing a novel silver nanocoating for application to hospital wastewater plumbing systems as a means to prevent biofilm formation and reduce nosocomial infections. During my PhD I routinely cultured a range of nosocomial and antibiotic resistant pathogens, developed techniques in biofilm quantification, bacterial characterisation (antimicrobial susceptibility testing, (q)PCR, median lethal dose using a larval model) and whole genome sequencing using Illumina and MinION platforms. I also applied materials engineering techniques to quantify factors such as adherence (tensile strength), surface roughness/hardness (confocal laser scanning microscopy), coating stability (dialysis assay, ICP-OES/-MS) and analysis of surface metal availability (Raman spectroscopy). In broad terms, my research interests are in infection and emerging infectious disease, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and strategies to combat it. I am a proponent of the 'One Health' approach to AMR which addresses the problem through a holistic and multisectoral viewpoint, bringing in considerations of humans, animals, and the environment.
